Some Low Carb Bread Reviews

Updated! 8/6/2013

My favorite new site to find good deal on low carb items is Netrition. I found them via Amazon, which is my 2nd favorite. Anyhow, they sell breads baked by a company called Mirico and the loaves are affordable, so I ordered their Cinnamon bread. I'm eating it right now and it's very good. Good enough to recommend! They have other flavors, of which I will try, but for now, the Cinnamon is great. It has a slight fibrousness that most low carb breads have, but the flavor and sweetness are perfect. I toasted some (from frozen) with some butter and they are soft and chewy with a crisp crust.

I finally ventured down to the Vitamin Cottage/Natural Grocers to pick up some of Julian Bakery's low carb bread loaf options. In stock they had the Smart Carb #1 (for $9.99!!!!)

and the Paleo Bread (also $9.99!!!!)

I slowly chewed my way through the Smart Carb #1 wondering if the #2 and #3 are any better. I hate to use the word cardboard, but the #1 bread is like a thick slice of it. I've tried it plain, toasted, and even tried to soak it in custard to make French Toast. It didn't like that at all and literally rejected the liquid back into the skillet. It's became a very expensive vehicle to get tasty sandwich pinnings into my gullet. I only ate most of it on principle because I paid so freakin' much for it!

I have also worked my way through the Paleo Bread. I tried it plain on a sandwich and toasted with butter. If you are desperate for bread, this will do, but it is much like it's counterparts as it is extremely chewy and doesn't soak up liquid. It is a somewhat more flavorful version of the Smart Carb #1 bread. I have decided not to try #2 or #3 or any other Julian Bakery breads for that matter.

Ready for some good news? This:

King Soopers/Kroger/City Market whatever-the-heck brand Carb Helper is really good! It has a soft actual bread-like texture and works great as toast, including the French style, and even makes a good bread pudding! Even better? It's $3-4 depending on if it's on sale or not. One time, I went to the clearance rack in the back of the store and picked up 6 loaves for $1.50 per! They are stacked in our basement freezer with bows and smiles.

Found this awesome site called netrition.com that has all sorts of low carb fun! I found things I didn't know existed (like Russell Stover's carb-free chocolate things!). These:

Toufayan Low Carb Pitas are Amahzing!

I have posted this in another recipe entry, but THESE:

I don't know if I had the "Plus!" ones, as I see they have just Carb Balance Flour as well, but these were like the real thing. They were soft, moist, chewy and I didn't notice a different from regular flour tortillas. They made great tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc! Sorry "Smart & Delicious", but you pale in comparison to the Mission kind! If you want to check out the "Smart & Delicious" kind, see my review of Julian Bakery's low carb bread because it's like that in a flat, thin version.
